Job Description:
TERM: Permanent
Clean Transportation Program
Union of Concerned Scientists
Remote - Located near existing office location preferred (CA, IL,
MA, D.C.)
The Position
The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) is an independent national
nonprofit that uses science to protect our health, safety, and
environment. We are scientists, engineers, economists, activists,
and everyday people who develop and advocate for innovative,
practical solutions to some of our planet's most pressing
problems-from combating global warming and developing sustainable
ways to feed, power, and transport ourselves, to fighting
misinformation, advancing racial equity, and reducing the threat of
nuclear war.
The Clean Transportation program at UCS works to transform the way
we move people and goods in this country. We're seeking an
experienced manager to help our growing team maximize our impact as
we advocate for a cleaner, more equitable transportation system in
the US.
The Deputy Director of Operations will leverage their skills and
expertise to help support our team, which includes dedicated
outreach, policy, and communications staff, in addition to
scientists and analysts. In this role, the Deputy Director of
Operations will collaborate with the Clean Transportation Program
Director and other leaders within UCS in ensuring the program is
operating effectively, including overseeing program administration,
supervising the execution and tracking of programmatic strategies,
helping the team center anti-racism in its work, managing team
budgets and processes for maximum effectiveness, and supporting a
positive team culture. The right candidate will bring expert
project management skills and an interest in working with our team
to enact our vision for a clean, more equitable, transportation
system.
The Deputy Director of Operations will advise the Program Director
and Deputy Director on operational, administrative, and financial
issues to shape programmatic discussions and decision-making. They
will also direct the development and implementation of CT
strategies, policies, and procedures related to budget and contract
management, human resources, project management, inter and
intra-program communications, and special projects.
As a member of UCS's senior leadership team, the Deputy Director of
Operations for the Clean Transportation Program is an
'institutional citizen' who contributes to setting and shaping
organization-wide policies and practices. In this role, the
Director will source and share best practices with and from other
UCS programs and departments, and proactively seek opportunities to
scale and deepen impact through efforts that join forces with other
UCS programs, departments, and external partners.
