Head of R&D, Molecular Assay

Your Role:

You will manage a team of 10 - 12 scientists to develop innovative molecular and protein assays for our Life Science Research Solutions business. This position will report to the Head of R&D of Detection Systems and Assays. Your duties as R&D Manager, Moleuclar Assays will include:

  • Managing the assay R&D team of 10-12 scientists based in St. Louis, MO and Temecula, CA
  • Responsible and accountable for designing, planning, and executing the molecular and protein assay new product introduction roadmap
  • Manage the life cycle of molecular and protein assay new products
  • Stay at the cutting edge of related technologies, lead the technology evaluation efforts to develop the short-term and long-term innovation roadmap
  • collaborating with Product Management, Sales, Service, Customer Support, Operations, and Quality stakeholders to ensure quality products are delivered and accepted into the market.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and mentor a highly functioning technical team of scientists with diverse experiences.
  • Provide project and technical leadership on cross functional teams through product design and development, production, and commercialization
  • Lead the team to design and execute the annual new product roadmap
  • Establish and maintain detailed project plans, define risks and recommend contingency plans as required in collaboration with the program manager and cross functional team members.
  • Key contributor and stakeholder in the definition of a product roadmap that aligns with the business model by investigating new technologies, assessing technical and conceptual risk and financial viability, and identifying innovative approaches and methodologies.
  • Support the Business Development team in assessing new technologies of partnership or acquisition opportunities.
  • Manage the performance and professional development of the R&D team.

Who You Are:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. Degree in Molecular Biology, or other biological science related majors
  • Minimum of 10 years of life science related experience in developing molecular assays with strong focus on NGS (next-generation sequencing)
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience managing teams and leading technical projects

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proven track record of delivering innovative new products to market successfully
  • Experience with both product & process development and transitioning products from R&D into Manufacturing
  • Proven track record of technical leadership from technology evaluation, technology development, Product Inception to Product Release
  • Working knowledge of molecular biology and molecular assays with extensive experience in next-generation sequencing
  • Ability to work in a highly matrixed organization
  • Strong communication skills (written and verbal), including experience presenting in front of multidisciplinary audiences
  • Effective project management, planning, financial analysis and organizational skills
  • Experience managing employee performance and professional development
  • Ability to travel based on project and business needs
