BJC Behavioral Health is a community health center that provides
and coordinates behavioral health services for more than 6,000
seriously mentally ill adults and seriously emotionally disturbed
children in St. Louis City, St. Louis County, St. Fran--ois, Iron
and Washington counties. As an Administrative Agent of the Missouri
Department of Mental Health (DMH) serves as a major point of entry
for people eligible for mental health services funded by DMH and is
responsible for serving as gatekeeper to the public mental health
system. BJC Behavioral Health also administers the BJC Employee
Assistance Program ad Behavioral Health Partners, an administrative

Service provides mental health support for St. Louis County school
districts from early childhood through high school.

Role PurposeTo provide mental health education, consultation, and
clinical assessments to students in the 23 school districts in St.
Louis County with advanced knowledge of how health and mental
health issues affect one another. Make recommendations to families
for specific healthcare assessments. Increase educators and
families understanding of behavioral issues identified students
have and ability to provide effective ways to address the issues
that allow the students to remain in school and be ready to learn.
Activities that the nurse specialist engages in include gathering
information from treating healthcare providers, educators, and
families and explaining in language each understands what the
issues, treatment, and goals each has for the identified students
and coordinating a plan of action. Also provide education to
community groups on children and youth mental health issues and
treatment - pharmacological and non-pharmacological.
- Provide Mental Health Consultation to Schools
---When requested by educators, provide clinical assessment and
recommendations of students whose emotional issues have a
significant impact on their educational functioning. This may
involve classroom observations and gathering of information from
others outside the school setting. Recommendations should assist in
identifying strategies and interventions for teachers and students
in the classroom
---Provide consultation and education to parents on their
children's' diagnoses, medications, other treatments, and community
---Assist in improved collaboration between school staff and
community mental health providers and provide referrals to mental
health services when indicated.
---Educate school staff on childhood psychiatric and physical
illnesses and the efficacy, side-effects, and interactions between
medications used to treat those illnesses. Also help staff
distinguish between symptoms of an illness and developmental stages
of childhood and adolescence.
Participate in team care and IEP meetings to support parents and
assist teams in the development of goals that are aligned with
students' emotional needs.
- Provide Mental Health Consultation to Special School Districts'
Therapeutic Classrooms in the different St. Louis County School
---Attend regularly scheduled (weekly or bi-monthly) Therapeutic
Classroom treatment team meetings where student issues, progress,
and treatment plan are reviewed. Review referrals for admission to
program and participate in IEP planning and reviews. Follow-up
outside the meetings on any assignments identified.
---When needed, provide classroom observation in the therapeutic
classrooms to assess how well interventions are working and, if
needed, provide coaching on how to better implement
---As part of the Therapeutic Classroom treatment team, provide
training to teachers and other school staff on who the program is
designed to help, admission criteria, and the types of supportive
activities that will help the students when not in Therapeutic
---Co-facilitate with NAMI evening support groups for parents.
---Participate in Special School District's on-going program
evaluations, data review, and program planning to provide quality
services based on current student needs.
- Provide Community Education of Childhood and Adolescent Mental
---Participate in community programs and health fairs with a focus
on childhood mental health. Currently provide the medication module
for Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) for St. Louis County, City,
and other police officers as well as health fairs
---Maintain certification as trainers in child and adolescent
Mental Health First Aid. To maintain certification must provide
three trainings a year to different community groups
---Facilitate student and parent education groups. Some recent
topics have included Depression, Suicide, Eating Disorders,
Substance Use Disorders; and Autism Spectrum.
---Participate in School Nurse summer conference hosted by another
BJC school program. Minimum Requirements Degree
