Responsibilities and Qualifications
Under the direction of the Surgery Center, performs a wide variety of environmental and operational support tasks. Activities include turning over OR rooms in an efficient and timely manner, case cart transport and delivery of supplies and materials throughout patient care areas. Works cooperatively with others as part of a team and recognizes the importance of group goals. Collaborates with medical staff, other appropriate disciplines, and ancillary departments to provide appropriate, timely and efficient patient care. Demonstrates fairness, integrity, and compassion in all interactions with patients, visitors and staff and respects the confidential information to which he/she may have access. Performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with our Mission, Values, and Mercy Service Standards.

- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Related experience preferred
Safety/Risk Management:a. Follows confidentiality policies and procedures.b. Complies with infection control guidelines.c. Creates a safe environment utilizing medical center/departmental specific policies.d. Respects patients'/guests' personal property.e. Adheres to hospital wide and specific department safety regulations, including, but not limited to: Fire and tornado; Environmental safety; Infection control.
Coordination of Services:a. Functions as a preceptor.b. Coordinates workflow by communicating to appropriate personnel in a timely manner.c. Notifes appropriate personnel of equipment/supply needs.d. Participates in quality improvement activities that ensure and enhance quality of patient care and/or reporting mechanisms.e. Handles stressful situations effectively.f. Demonstrates flexibility regarding workload, assignments, and change.
Primary Aspects:a. Performs all necessary activities that pertain to case readiness, including, but not limited to:- Turning over instruments as needed- Assisting with preps and positioning- Bringing equipment to the OR rooms- Wiping down and putting away used equipment prior to returning to open storage, returning broken equipment to appropriate area- Straightening up open storage room daily b. Stocking and ordering all necessary items, including, but not limited to: - Blanket warmers with blankets and fluids 4 times per day, labeling fluids with date- Hats, masks, and shoe covers in male and female locker rooms as well as outside of the MD locker room and OR Rooms- Foam positioning aids and scrub brushes daily- Stock cart for prep stand/OR Room supplies- Changing and checking out prep stand trays as needed- Bleach bottles and gel disinfectant on prep stands as needed- Replacing suction tubing and filters monthly c. Performs all activities that comprise turnover of OR rooms, including, but not limited to: - Checking for red flags and get report as to any rooms that need to be cleaned for 7am cases- Wiping down lights before the first case of the day- Picking up mop heads from housekeeping and filling mop buckets- Responding to OR pages in a courteous and timely manner- Wiping off all horizontal surfaces and noticeable blood, making bed, pushing dirty case cart into the hall, sweeping and mopping floor- Placing dirty instruments in decontamination room, then sending dirty case cart down on the dumb waiter- Wiping down equipment and returning to open storage if no longer needed d. Performs activities that demonstrate proper time management skills and priority setting, including, but not limited to: - Turning OR Rooms over timely and efficiently- Prioritizing answering pages as necessary - Utilizing down time effectively - Restocking supplies as needed- Planning for next day as needed- Assisting other team members as needed- Making frequent rounds in assigned areas - Demonstrating flexibility regarding workload, assignments, and change - Working efficiently in any hall assigned - Reporting maintenance problems and correcting within scope - Using effective problem solving methods in dealing with problems and dissatisfactions - Responding appropriately to patient and staff needs. Knows when to involve Supervisor/Manager- Assisting with overall teamwork of the department when irregular situations occur (i.e., illness, vacation, etc.) - Training coworkers to perform duties when needed - Completing projects as assigned - Observing departmental/Medical Center guidelines with special consideration given to attendance, punctuality, and dress code
Communication Management:a. Acknowledges individuals in a prompt and courteous manner, making them feel welcome to the unit/medical center.b. Responds to identified/expressed needs in a prompt and courteous manner.c. Makes independent decisions in routine situations and informs appropriate persons of actions and results.
