Additional Information About the Role
ENT/plastic surgery and observation unit is consistently ranked
among the best in the nation by U.S.News & World Report. This unit
allows nurses the opportunity to specialize in tracheostomy/flap
care and work with leech therapy. Nurses are heavily involved in
patient teaching and use their assessment skills to care for
post-surgical patients who have had reconstructive surgery. Staff
on this division cared for the first patient in the country to have
restored speech through the use of an artificial larynx.

Overview
Barnes-Jewish Hospital at Washington University Medical Center is

The Surgical Services Department provides pre-op and post-op
inpatient care to those patients undergoing surgical procedures in
the areas of ENT and Plastic surgery. - Inpatient care in this
department focuses on pre-op needs, post-op care and treatment
after phase I recovery through discharge from an inpatient nursing
division. The department's surgical observation unit provides more
intensive care and treatment to those post-op or post-traumatic
patients whose condition requires treatment at this level.
