Description Position Summary The Fiber Optic Splicer is responsible
for the installation, splicing, testing, and maintenance of fiber
optic networks in a variety of environments including aerial,
underground, and FTTH systems. This role requires technical
expertise, attention to detail, and the ability to work
independently while maintaining high-quality standards. Key
Responsibilities - Install, splice, and maintain new and existing
fiber optic networks. - Prepare and splice single-mode (SM) and
multi-mode (MM) fiber optic cables, including ribbon and loose tube
configurations. - Perform fiber splicing using single and mass
fusion splicing equipment. - Terminate fiber using connectors and
pigtails. - Conduct testing using OTDR, OLTS, power meters, and VFL
equipment. - Install splice closures, capsules, and associated
hardware. - Perform mid-sheath cable entries and work within active
fiber networks. - Troubleshoot, repair, and respond to network
outages. - Maintain system integrity without causing service
interruptions. - Document all work performed, including production
reports, test results, and customer documentation. - Maintain and
care for tools, equipment, vehicles, and trailers. - Complete
certification testing and ensure network performance meets
specifications. - Follow all safety regulations including OSHA,
NESC, NEC, and company standards. Required Skills & Qualifications
- Minimum of 4 years of hands-on experience in fiber optic splicing
required. - Strong understanding of fiber optic theory, including
signal loss, connector types, and fiber classifications. -
Experience working with ribbon fiber and loose tube cable,
including ribbonizing and deribbonizing. - Proficiency with OTDR,
OLTS, power meters, and VFL testing equipment. - Ability to operate
fusion splicing equipment (single and mass fusion). - Ability to
read and interpret splice diagrams, prints, and matrices. -
Knowledge of FTTH, aerial, and underground fiber installations. -
Ability to identify fiber color codes and differentiate fiber types
and sizes. - Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills. -
Ability to work independently and meet production timelines while
maintaining quality. - Strong organizational, documentation, and
communication skills. - Basic computer proficiency (MS Office and
web-based systems). Work Requirements - Willingness to travel up to
100%, including overnight travel. - May follow extended travel
schedules (e.g., 10 days on / 4–5 days off depending on project
needs). - Ability to work outside normal business hours, including
nights and weekends. - Participation in an on-call rotation may be
required. Physical & Environmental Requirements - Ability to work
indoors in confined spaces such as attics, basements, crawlspaces,
and manholes. - Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Capable of climbing ladders, working in bucket trucks (up to 50
ft), and climbing utility poles. - Ability to lift, carry, and use
tools and equipment required for fiber installation. - Comfortable
working around dust, noise, insects, rodents, and other
environmental factors. General Requirements - Valid driver’s
license with a clean driving record. - Ability to pass a DOT
physical. - Must provide basic hand tools (specialty tools
provided). - Mechanically inclined with the ability to safely
operate tools and equipment. - Maintain a professional appearance
and attitude with customers and team members. - Detail-oriented,
dependable, and self-motivated. Compensation Structure - Hourly pay
during training period. - Transition to piece-rate pay upon
demonstrated competency and ability to work independently.
